Adulterant test lets you detect the adulterant in urine specimen. The Specimen Validity Test (Adulteration Test Strips) enables you to detect adulterants such as Oxidant/PCC, Specific Gravity, pH, Glutaraldehyde, Nitrites and Creatinine in a given urine specimen.

This test must be used before performing any drug test on the urine specimen. These days many products are available for people to pass a drug test. To get to know the real test results of a drug test, specimen validity test must be performed. The seven adulterants in the specimen can be detected by comparing the color on each test pad with the corresponding pad on the color chart.

About Adulterants Tested in the Urine Specimen

  • Creatinine: Creatine is an amino acid present in muscle tissue and the waste of creatine called creatinine is a normal constituent of human urine. When a person drinks excessive amount of water or liquid was added to the urine after collection, level of creatinine becomes low in urine. Creatinine can be used as a marker for dilution of urine specimen and can detect the tempering with the urine specimen. .The DOT guideline1 states that urine specimens with creatinine levels of less than 20mg/dl are indications of adulteration.
  • Nitrites: Nitrates are chemical that are not found in normal human urine. Adulterants such as Klear and Whizzies use nitrites to oxidize and destroy the major cannabinoid metabolite (THC-COOH) in urine specimen. If nitrates are present in urine then the urine specimen is tempered.
Although nitrite is not a normal component of urine, nitrite levels of up to 3.6mg/dl may be found in some urine specimens due to urinary tract infections, bacterial contamination or improper storage. In the TECO, nitrite level above 7.5mg/dl is considered abnormal.
  • Glutaraldehyde: Glutaraldehyde is a chemical compound that is not found in urine. It can be used as an adulterant to inactivate the enzyme used in the EMIT automated drug screening reagent. If Glutaraldehyde is detected in urine specimen, the specimen indicates adulteration.
False positive results of Glutaraldehyde may be appear in urine, when a person is in ketoacidosis, starvation or other metabolic abnormalities.
  • Oxidants:  Oxidantssuch asbleach, hydrogen peroxide, and pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) can be used as adulterants to oxidize and destroy the major cannabinoid metabolite (THC-COOH) in urine specimen. The presence of oxidants in urine specimen indicates adulteration.
  • pH: pHused to test the presence of acidic or alkaline adulterants in urine. Normal urine pH levels should be in the range of 4.0 - 9.0 values outside of this range indicates adulteration.
  • Specific Gravity: Specific Gravitytests for the "viscosity" of the urine sample. The SG range for normal human urine is from 1.003 to 1.030. Values outside this range should be considered abnormal and may indicate specimen tampering. DOT guidelines1 states that a urine specimen with specific gravity level of less than 1.003 is an indication of adulteration.
