Drug Testing – Drug Abuse In Maternal-Fetal Interactions



Drug abuse is common in the childbearing age population. The effects of substance abuse on the fetus are adverse. Many women though they know the harmful effects of substance abuse during pregnancy do not discontinue their drug use pattern. Drug abuse during pregnancy is considered as major health issue due to its relative effect on maternal health and fetus development. An extensive care need to be taken on these women which is in fact very difficult and demanding. However, most of these women do not take adequate prenatal care. There are also theories surrounding the fact that these substance abused women do not complete their pregnancies either because of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

Placenta is considered as the main link between the fetus and the mother. The use of drug can often result in malformation of the placenta causing severe or adverse effects on the fetus. Even a research is being carried out on the placental biology to exactly find the extent to which and how these illicit drugs affect the placenta.

Almost every type of positives were on in cases of pregnancy and drug addiction. They tested positive on cocaine drug test kits, oxycodone drug screening, percocet drug testing, urine nicotine test etcetera.

These women face the problems of increased morbidity and mortality in the postpartum period. A report on the relationship between the cocaine use in maternity and perinatal outcomes shows an increased risk of low birth weight infants, premature birth, abruption placenta, and perinatal death. An increased rate of intrapartum placenta previa is observed in women with maternity cocaine use.

Lastly, a significant number of HIV positive pregnant women were known to be exposed to injection drug use. However, there are some of them who stop their addictive behavior after pregnancy, but still there are many who are not ready to stop, despite being aware of the complications.
