PLEASE NOTE: In some cases, when the donor has used marijuana, a hair drug test, including HairConfirm, may be unable to detect the THC metabolite due to the fact that the metabolite was unable to bind with the hair shaft. This can be caused by the type/quality of the marijuana smoked/ingested, or by what it has been mixed with, e.g. tobacco. As a result, the result for marijuana may be negative.

Statistics have shown that teenagers who have used marijuana are more likely to use other potentially more dangerous drugs, than those who have never used marijuana. So if you suspect your child may be using marijuana it is important to remember that you are also testing for those illicit drugs.

Hair drug test can rest for five drugs: Cocaine (cocaine & benzoylecgonine), Marijuana(THC), Opiates (Codeine, Morphine & 6-monacteyl morphine), Methamphetamine (Meth, Amphetamine & Ecstasy), and Phencyclidine (PCP).

Hair Drug Initial Immunoassay Screening Cutoffs

When a person consumes drugs, its toxins are induced into the bloodstream and trace amounts of the drug or drug metabolite are deposited into the core of the hair follicles.  The hair for test should have one month of hair growth and they should be collected from various locations except from the pubic area.
Hair drug tests are conducted using enzyme-immunoassay (EIA). EIA measures the drug molecules deposited into the hair follicle after the drug was used.

Drug Test Procedure

The shells of the hair strands are removed from the hair spcimen to eliminate any external contaminants. The specimen is then placed in a chemical solution and put through gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC/MS) test which performs a drug analysis on a molecular level to determine specific drug metabolites in the urine or hair specimen.

Hair Specimen Collection Instructions

• Insure that head hair has not been bleached, dyed or permanently waved within the past 3 months. If so, collect body hair. Using a large hair clip, select a clump of hair in the crown area of the head. Using thinning shears (scissors) cut the donor’s hair as close to the scalp as possible. A comb may be used to help harvest the cuttings. A sample of approximately 100 milligrams, which is a ponytail 1½ inch long and the diameter of a #2 pencil, is needed. Please refer to laminate Hair Collection Example Card for a visual reference. If necessary, collect from several different areas.
• Place hair in foil with the root end at the notched area of the foil. Fold and cinch foil and place foil inside the envelope.
• Seal the envelope with red security seal and initial seal. Place chain of custody number sticker from the Requisition Form on the envelope. The donor guardian/witness/etc.) reads and initials the appropriate area on the envelope, then dates, prints and signs his/her name on the Requisition Form. The collector does the same. This initiates chain of custody.
• In the presence of donor, place the white copy of the Requisition Form in outer pocket of security bag. Place envelope in other pocket of security bag. Then seal and initial bag. The other two copies of the Requisition Form are to be distributed at the discretion of the collector/collecting institution.

Proper Shipping Methods

USDTL will provide preprinted Airborne Express air bills for your convenience. Place as many sealed hair bags as possible into the overnight courier’s mailing containers. Call your local overnight courier office for pick-up of package. Even though other couriers may be utilized, we recommend shipment by overnight courier.
